<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Lee Kyu Tak is one of the most versatile teaware artists I know. His teaware includes teapots, water pots, water heaters, water storage jars, waste water jars, ceremonial tea caddies, storage tea caddies, chawan, incense censers and incense cases. I have not found another teaware artist who exceeds the variety of teaware items as those produced by Lee Kyu Tak. There are so many teaware options that I am probably missing some. In addition, he treats each of them in so many different ways that it is impossible to show them all. So this blog post is limited to teapots and tea sets and can only be an introduction to them.
If you are interested in purchasing, you should know that the items you see here may no longer be available. We will be happy to see what is available since at this time we do not stock his work. I’m just a potter trying to promote Korean tea and teaware and can’t afford to carry much stock.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To begin let’s look at the anatomy of a good teapot.
The Body: The teapot body must not be so large that the infused tea will become cold, strong or bitter before it is consumed. That is why most Korean teapots are quite small compared to Western style teapots or English style.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Cooling: While it is not a teapot, a Korean style teapot must have a companion cooling bowl, cooling pitcher or open cooling teapot. When infusing with a Korean teapot, the tealeaves are infused in the teapot and the entire finished contents poured into the cooling pot before serving. This insures proper brewing for all infusions. The tea is served from the cooling pot not the teapot. So the cooling vessel must have a large enough capacity to receive all the tea from the teapot.
Since Korean teapots do come in various sizes you will want to consider the use of your particular teapot. Will you be using it for 3 or fewer guests or for larger groups?
Next to the body capacity and the cooling vessel, we should look at either the spout or the lid opening. Because I can treat it simply, let’s look at the spout.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Spout: The opening of the spout in relation to the water level of the teapot is very important. If you draw a visual line from the bottom of the opening of the spout straight back to the handle that line will be at the maximum water level for the teapot. All of Lee Kyu Tak’s teapots are made with that in mind. This is particularly important. There are many, usually Western made teapots, where the spot opening is far too low on the pot. This should be the first thing a potter considers when adding a spout to a teapot.
Next, let’s look at the opening of the teapot itself. But first The Knob:<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Does the knob function well? <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Opening: Take off the lid and look inside. With this size of an opening, will this teapot be easy to clean? Will it be relatively easy to add the loose tealeaves to the teapot? Will it be easy to remove the used loose tealeaves from this teapot? With all of Lee Kyu Tak’s teapots the answer is a resounding YES.
The Strainer: Is a tea leaf strainer built into the teapot? Teapots for loose leaf tea must have a leaf strainer. Are the holes in the strainer small enough to block most leaves from coming out of the teapot? Note: it is impossible to block all leaf fragments and tea dust from coming out of the spout. That is why we often use an external mesh strainer when serving tea. The teapot straining holes are the first defense. Some small leaves may escape because they enter the strainer hole point end first and broken pieces and tea leaf dust really can’t be avoided. Lee Kyu Tak’s teapot strainers are perfect. When considering a teapot, look at the thickness of the glaze within the teapot. Was the glaze applied so thickly that it filled or reduced the size of the strainer holes? Are the strainer holes too large or too small? This is not an issue with Lee Kyu Tak.
One other thought on strainer holes. There is currently a debate between serious teapot artists who are asking which style is best A) holes through the natural wall of the teapot or B) indenting the wall to create a bulbous strainer. While many Western artists are taught to indent a bulbous form before creating the strainer holes some Asian teaware artists, who know tea deeply, are now arguing for the non-indented strainer.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">are a matter of personal choice. Which is better for you? Can you ‘handle’ the teapot easily with the handle on your teapot? The large majority of Lee Kyu Tak’s handles are back handles. That choice is an interesting one. According to my teacher the Japanese master Hamada Shoji, Korea was the first country to use side handles.
The Decoration: While the decoration of a teapot has little to do with the physical aspects of a teapot, it has a lot to do with the emotional, perceptual and spiritual aspects of a teapot. This is your teapot. You must decide what type of mood you want to achieve with your teapot. Some may want a flower on their teapot because a flower makes them feel good.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Others may want a teapot that is very humble and simple because such a piece will aid their meditation while drinking tea.
There are many possibilities and all are legitimate because a teapot is personal. Will that teapot serve you well? Go back to my first post on Lee Kyu Tak for more on decoration.
Now that we have looked at the anatomy of a good teapot, lets look at some of the tea sets and other teapots made by Lee Kyu Tak.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Even that many items may not be enough for some tea connoisseurs. This ‘cherry blossom’ buncheong set has all the items above plus an additional teapot, including a larger one with a side handle and a smaller one in addition to two cooling options i.e. a cooling bowl and an open cooling teapot.
What “basic” items might be added to such a set? Very little. Although other teaware artists might add an ‘ocean’ and ‘boat’ or other water handling systems.
On our many travels to Korea, we have always tried to find one or two ceramic artists whose work is outstanding and touches us deeply. These artists have formed the foundation of the content of our ceramic tours. Our tour guests have often wondered how we were able to connect with so many exceptional ceramic artists. Simply put, it takes time, dedication and many trips to Korea.
We first met Lee Kyu Tak in 2001 when we attended the first World Ceramic Exposition in Icheon, Korea. Lee Kyu Tak was exhibiting his work and also had an artist’s booth. Mary first spotted his work and called me to look at it. It is rare to find a ceramic artist with such control of surface and form as that displayed by Lee Kyu Tak and also touches you deeply.

Goryo Dynasty Cosmetic Cases

Of course it is
not fair to compare old Goryeo Dynasty celadon made by humble artisans with a contemporary artist's
buncheong. Lee Kyu Tak’s cases made by a highly trained artist surpass the original in many ways. However, the Goryeo work exhibits great skill and has a soft quality that can't be duplicated except perhaps by time. Lee would not be
producing such works had the humble Goryeo artists not gone before.

Lee Kyu Tak has both revived and re-purposed these cases for the storage of incense.
Many potters shy away from these small cases since they must be made to fit perfectly. Lee seems to relish this challenge.

Lee Kyu Tak began his studies by seeking out and studying with the great Japanese master the 11th Takatori Seijan. Under the 11th Takatori Seijan, Lee developed the foundation of the discipline exhibited in his work today.
(We know that the Takatori family of potters are descendants of captive Korean potters from Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s Imjin War of 1592-98 that is also known as the Pottery War.)
It is not easy to connect with some artists. We were not able to connect with Lee Kyu Tak for two years. Then we discovered that the road is very narrow with twists and turns. A large bus can’t make it. He seemed hidden from the world. But the effort to find him has many rewards.
To create stamped buncheong, Lee Kyu Tak must first create the stamps - hundreds of them. Each stamp has been carved by hand from leather hard clay and then fired to a bisque. Then each stamped impression is carefully inlaid with soft white clay at the consistency of heavy cream allowed to stiffen and the excess is scraped away leaving the white design. Each step takes hours of work and care. Click on the above image twice to see the detail of his work.
Lee Kyu Tak's versatility and understanding of the breadth and depth of ceramics can be illustrated with this and the previous piece. This more rustic surface is the oldest type of glaze known. It is simply a mixture of selected wood ashes and water. However a more sophisticated artist like Lee Kyu Tak is probably also adjusting his ash mixture with some feldspar. Natural stone in the clay body add to the feel of this chawan.

For a Korean, this style is quite interesting. In Japan the style is called Chosen Karatsu and is a style of glazing used by many ceramic artists in the Karatsu area of Japan. But where did this style originate? Why is it called "Chosen" Karatsu? Why is it sometimes called 'Korean' Karatsu? Ans: this glazing style comes from a type of Korean onggi. You might say, "I never saw Korean onggi glazed that way". That is because it comes from captive Korean potters during the Imjin War (1592-1598) who lived in the area of Korea we now call North Korea. I'll show some examples of the North Korean onggi in this style on my onggi blog some day.
Jinsa! Copper red! One might think that the use of copper to obtain this blood red color originated in China but Korea was using copper red 200 years before the Chinese. The Korean term for this is 'jinsa'. There are two types of jinsa, 1. jinsa-yu that results in large areas of red often covering the pot completely and 2. jinsa-che or decoration with the brush to create the cherished blood red color often using gold. The upper right corner illustration showing 9 examples of Lee Kyu Tak's work is jinsa-che but most likely not created by the use of gold. The red and white areas on the jinsa-yu bottle above is the result of various amounts of oxygen in that part of the kiln during firing. Sufficient oxygen = white, reduced oxygen = red. The glaze is the same.
This incense censer or burner and accompanying incense case are right at home with those who understand Tea deeply. (Capital T) Some may counter argue that the aroma of tea and incense are too competitive. While others reply that simple incense like aloeswood (also known as agarwood) is so subtle it enhances the Tea experience. In any case this 'higher' relief carved incense censer and case are beautifully carved by Lee Kyu Tak to enhance the experience of tea. I would like comments on this subject.
Korea has a long history of Korean blue and white ware but this bold blue and white design is purely Lee Kyu Tak. This is bold and boisterous where as old Korean blue and white ware is often very subtle and the blue is sparse. Why? The color is obtained through the use of cobalt. Cobalt was very expensive during the Joseon Dynasty and the cobalt was often impure resulting in subtle grey-blue tones. Here Lee Kyu Tak does the opposite, shouting BLUE but still there remains a softness to this contemporary blue.
Note: This extremely brief description of Korea’s ceramic styles is not intended to be complete nor is it intended to describe in detail the many multi-faceted approaches to each of the styles mentioned. That would take literally volumes on each of these styles. Rather it is intended to be a very quick look at these styles so that we might be able to distinguish one from the other.

5. Buncheong: Buncheong is characterized by the use of white and sometimes black slip in decorating most often on a darker clay body. Buncheong decorating processes include but are not limited to carved and inlaid slip called ‘sang hwa mun’, reverse inlay, stamped inlay, brushed on slip and dipped slip decorating processes.

These examples show a variety of Buncheong decrorating processes. Buncheong became popular when celadon died out during the last days of the Goryeo Dynasty. The earliest Buncheong decorations were reminicent of celadon decorations. During its 200 year history Buncheong decorations became less complex and more natural.

8. Contemporary: The words ‘contemporary’ and ‘modern’ are rather synonymous and it was a coin flip decision to use ‘contemporary’ meaning in this case ‘current’, ‘latest’ or leading edge. One could argue that anything made recently is ‘contemporary’ but that leads to a circular argument that I don’t want to have. Often ‘contemporary’ ceramics like much contemporary art has its roots in historical work.
Contemporary work can follow or break the 'rules' as the artist sees appropriate.
I have selected, for now, just two artists to represent the Contemporary Style Lee Kang Hyo who is inspired by buncheong and onggi and Shin Sangho who has been inspired by African sculpture and other works. The ceramic style examples in Part 1 and Part 2 are not meant to show all the possible variations of these eight ceramic styles. Rather they were simply selected to show some variety within the styles.

The styles in Part 1 span the early part of Korea’s ceramic history essentially from 57 BCE to 1392 CE when celadon died out and buncheong began. It also marks the transition between The Goryeo Dynasty and the Joseon Dynasty sometimes called the Yi Dynasty and a major change in the religious/philosophical direction of Korea from Buddhism to Confucianism. The Joseon Dynasty that officially lasted from 1392 CE to 1910 CE was not kind to tea in Korea but ceramics survived and with it the development of Korean chawan and much more.

The styles of Korean ceramics can be told as history lessons reflected in the political and cultural changes in Korea.

1. Silla Style: Silla style is gray sometimes with flashes of fly ash glaze where the dust of flying ash from the wood firing has melted on the clay surface. It is not glazed. Silla style means that it is in the style that was being produced during the Silla Period 57BCE to 668 CE. Korea’s climbing kilns reached temperatures high enough to melt the dust ash on the pieces during the firing. Silla style’s gray color and sometimes brown comes from the final stages of the firing when the carbon created from the wood firing is driven into the clay body by adding pine branches and closing off the kiln causing it to be gray to brown depending on the amount of reduction. Most fly ash that lands on the pot during these conditions turns black because of the carbon inducing process. These examples of Silla Style were created by Park Byung Teak Intangible Cultural Asset.

2. Anagama: Anagama is an off shoot of Silla style. In this case the potter introduces greater amounts of wood to create more fly ash and thus more melted fly ash on the final piece. Typically anagama is unglazed ware that gains its glazes from the melting of fly-ash on the surface of the ware. This fly ash glaze is most often tan or yellow in color because of sufficient oxygen in the kiln. Most often Anagama Style is also more rugged and natural. Although Anagama Style comes from the Silla style way of working it has developed its own identity. These examples of Anagama Style are by Kim Dae Woong. These examples of Celadon are by (1) Kim Yu Sung, (2) Jong Ki Bong (3) Gangjin Celadon Center (4) Gangjin Celadon Center. The four celadon pieces were selected to show a variety of color, decoration and style. While some scholars suggest that (4) was a 'wine' ewer. Contemporary thinkers are now agreeing that it was used for water or tea. Tea was the drink of the masses during the Goryeo Dynasty when Celadon was most popular in Korea. The lotus leaves surrounding the bottom indicate a strong Buddhist connection to this piece. Buddhism and wine are not compatible. The metamorphosis of a sea creature into a dragon is a well recognized Korean theme.

The above styles began during Korea's Three Kingdom Period and span from 57 BCE to 1392 CE.

Image by Joan Martin a Tour Guest

Recently I received some
images of chawan (teabowls) from Park Jong Il. We introduced him a few years ago to the Western tea world
and his teapots have gained considerable attention internationally. Several of you have asked about chawan
so I asked him to send me images of some moderately priced examples. He had been having some difficulty getting images of his
work to me over the years so I suggested that he simply use his cell phone. Well, really it is a smart
phone. Using a smart phone in this
way is an easy and efficient way to share images. I’ve been doing it ever since I moved up to a smart phone
and it has helped clients quickly view various options.
In fact I have a ‘smart phone’ sale of Park Jong Il’s tea ware now. Of course we can also use email for the
same purpose.

When we select a chawan, it is like choosing anything that you want to be part of your life for a long time. It is like selecting a puppy, mantle clock or even a friend. What are you looking for? Each of us comes to that decision from our own place with our own goals. What I might respond to may not be what you would respond to because we may be looking for different things.

Park Jong Il is best known for his teapots. While his teapots are usually consistent and recognizable as uniquely his, his chawan are different. In a real sense his chawan are like a group of people that might attend a gathering to celebrate tea. Some are masculine, some are feminine, some are more rugged than others – I think you get the picture.

Park Jong Il takes that approach because he understands that a chawan must serve people individually and each person must find in their personal chawan an energy that compels them to return again and again. Sure you may use a single chawan for group Tea but the one serving selects the bowl. This is not to say that there are not or should not be certain criteria for exceptional chawan but untimately it is your decision. Please view all of this post before you make your decision.

Lets look at Park Jong Il’s chawan.

I will begin with those I consider simple and progress to the more complex. Each bowl lists for $300.00. A fair price for quality chawan. Contact me for details and your special price.

This open chawan is a classic example following one of Korean traditional forms. It is made with Jerisan clay, as are all of these bowls, considered by Korean ceramic artists to be the best clay for teabowls. Park Jong Il used this same clay for the walls of his home and tea gallery. It is glazed with a feldspathic glaze and fired with wood. This like many excellent bowls will age when used. In 3-5 years of use and care this bowl will blossom. But from the beginning it will be a pleasure to use. It fit the hands beautifully.

The foot has the appropriate 'nipple'.

A deep quickly formed ‘gqey-yl’ buncheong bowl fired with wood, subtle in color is always enticing to tea connoisseurs. This bowl is a fine example of that. Its light pale orange 'flesh' color like the two earlier bowls is a desired color.

When you fire with wood, you put yourself in the hands of the ‘spirit of the kiln’. Some pieces will be flashed with fire, some will be more matte than others, some may have ash spots etc. It is part of the ‘dance’ with the outer powers influencing ones work that makes the creation of chawan so fascinating and intriguing.

This strong, quickly formed ‘tum-bung-mun’ buncheong chawan is another classic bowl with a classic finish. This time another type of 'buncheong'. Tum-bung-mun simply means that the bowl was dipped in 'slip' (a liquid clay). The term 'gqey-yl', used earlier, refers to brushing the slip. The term 'buncheong' is a modern term used to explain a number of different decorating processes where the use of slip was employed in various ways. Two of the more popular processes are 'gqey-yl' or brushed slip and ‘tum-bung-mun’ or dipped slip.

The story of buncheong is a long one and often confusing. I'll tell it on one of my blogs some day. Buncheong processes were most popular between 1392 CE and 1592 CE when Korea was invaded and many ceramic artists were captured and taken east during the Imjin War.

The bowl is deep, the foot is strong and quickly tooled. This bowl with its Korean decorating process fits the Korean 'Pungnyu' aesthetic philosophy with its natural unrestrained movement - like the flow of wind.

Now we move to a different glaze - ash. Wood ash or really most ashes are a natural glaze. The first glazes were essentially ashes and water dating back to the Han Dynasty. Ash glazes are another highly desirable finish for a chawan. But one must rely on those 'outer powers' I mentioned earlier. In this case the ash mottling is beautiful.

PJI 7 10 cm H 12 cm W

This is another ash glazed chawan. I wanted to show three sides of the same bowl because the bowl's surface varies so much and because Park Jong Il sent me so many sides of it. Like PJI 5, this is a strong quickly formed bowl capturing the movement of the wheel. It also fits the Korean 'Pungnyu' aesthetic philosophy with its natural unrestrained movement - like the flow of wind.

The bowl is deep, the foot is strong and quickly tooled - another great chawan example by Park Jong Il.

Each bowl is listed at $300 USD, a very fair price for quality chawan. But it may be possible that your price could be less. All bowls are currently still in Korea and shipping is not included. However, we may be able to negotiate both the price and shipping costs a little so contact me if you are interested in a chawan by Park Jong Il.

I cannot leave this post without a further attempt at explaining the Korean aesthetic philosophy of Pungnyu at least a little more. Although any short explanation like this probably does the term more disservice than service. Pungnyu is not limited to 'movement' as illustrated in PJI 5 and PJI 7. Pungnyu's meaning is much deeper and varied. Like the wind itself, the aesthetics of Pungnyu can be calm and serene or a raging torrent. Korean aesthetics principles involve those things that are natural and 'free'. In a sense the fact that Park Jong Il is not tied down to one style of chawan indicates that he is embracing that philosophy.

This is the first of two posts on Park Jong Il's tea ware.
Ever since I introduced Park Jong Il’s tea ware to the Western tea world they have been gaining in popularity. A number of tea connoisseurs have purchased two or more of his teapots. European blogs are borrowing and translating my posts on him as he continues to grow in popularity internationally. I’m particularly pleased that Asian tea folk are finding his work through me. But of course that is who Park Jong Il sells more of his tea ware to, so that should not come as a surprise.

A tea master in Korea told me that Park Jong Il’s unglazed teapots, either white or dark, are better than either China’s Yixing or Japan’s Bizen tea ware. I’m not making that claim because like tea a teapot must also suit your personal taste. I’m just happy that Park Jong Il is being appreciated by many of you internationally. If this is your first Park Jong Il teapot, you won’t be alone.

If you have seen any celadon at all, in quick passing you might simply ignore this cup and place it with a million other celadon cups with crane and cloud carved inlay or rather sanggam technique. But this cup is far different even if you may not be able to see all of its qualities in the flat world of digital screen imagery.

The cup was
made by the wonderful female ceramic artist Kim Yu Sung. Kim Yu Sung is one of the only female celadon artists to
have won the prestigious Gangjin Celadon Award at Gangjin Korea’s annual
celadon competition held each year during the Gangjin Celadon Festival. Receiving this award placed her among
the nation’s best celadon artists.

She was selected by the city of Gangjin to be their representative demonstration carver for the New York opening of the International Gangjin Celadon Exhibition and her work truly stands out.

Fortunately for us one of her specialties is tea ware.

This crane carving is just 3.5cm. The dark legs are like tiny hairs even here. Imagine what it is like in actual scale.

Instead of looking at what this cup is, let's think about what this cup is not. It is not too green. It is not too gray. It is not too blue. It is not too light. It is not too dark. It is not too yellow. It is not too intense. It is not too large. It is not too small. It is not too thick. It is not too thin. It has no crazing. "Wait a minute." you might ask, "What do you mean, it has no crazing? I thought crazing was a good thing with celadon. I thought that celadon should have that, "cracked ice" look with lots of crazing." Well, to be blunt, crazing is a glaze fault. True we ceramic artists often like glaze faults. But do we really like them or do we adjust to them? Let's consider the celadon artists who because of the quality of their clay, the mixture of their glaze and the firing of their kiln simply can't produce celadon without crazing. Answer: Teach the world that crazing is good when it comes to celadon, create a memorable poetic term, - "cracked ice". Sounds pretty good. Say this so long and so often that you believe it yourself or because your teacher said so and we have "cracked ice" celadon. But the fact remains that the very best celadon has no "cracked ice" crazing. The fact remains that crazing is a glaze flaw.

This no "cracked ice" celadon is from Gangjin. Or should I say this pure smooth almost soft perfect secret color celadon is from Gangjin. Gangjin was the major center for the old celadon that was famous during the Goryeo Dynasty (918CE-1392CE) when celadon was in its glory. Gangjin was so famous then that today if you visit an art museum, anywhere in the world, that is fortunate to have an old 12th century celadon piece, there is a good chance it was made in Gangjin. Eighty percent (80%) of the celadon found in the museums of the world today were made in Gangjin- and traditionally without crazing. That is Gangjin celadon has no crazing.

Kim Yu Sung lives and works in Gangjin. She is co-founder and ceramic artist at the new Gangjin Goryo Celadon Institute along with Kang Kwang Mugg. They have established a beautiful center and have some great things happening there that I'll tell you about later. If you can't wait to learn about them, email me. Adventurous ceramic artists in particular should consider doing that.

We are all familiar with the aesthetics of the natural - like earth and stone. This is the aesthetics of nature like clouds and and a gentle breeze. This is the aesthetics of nature that is pure and humble and soft and even delicate. A whisper of color - not a shout. Such is this simple celadon cup by Kim Yu Sung - true poetry. Poetry that isn't forced but just 'is' - beautiful.

Why did I decide to write this post? I paired this cup with a tea. Not any tea, an unusual Darjeeling called Treasure Gold and a new offering at Morning Crane Tea.

There was something about that golden tea that made me think about this cup and something about this cup that made me think about this golden tea.

In February 2010 I created a post on how the tea ware artist Park Jong Il handles water and introduced the da-sun (tea-boat) and da-hae (tea-sea). When we speak about them in English we ofter refer to them as "boat and ocean" sets in Korea simply as "da-hae" sets. With this post we are able to offer four sets, each set represents something special about the work of Park Jong Il.

One should know that Park Jong Il carefully develops different clay bodies for his different styles of work. Those clay bodies form the foundation for the work and glazed or unglazed they impact the final piece in profound ways.

Since I have been offering Park Jong Il's teapots, a significant number of customers from Asian countries are finding us and buying his sets. While their backgrounds and experience with tea varies, like all of us, each have expressed to me how wonderful they think his teapots are. I will be posting on one of these tea connoisseurs in another blog in the near future.

Historically, I have not had many dae-hae sets to offer. In fact these will be shipped directly to you from Park Jong Il's studio in the mountains of Gyeongju, Korea. Park Jong Il selected these dae-hae sets especially for this offering.

I suggest that you wait for the "kicker'. What does that mean?

White Da-hae Set

1. White Da-hae Set: $600: This beautiful set features a teapot with ‘snale’ knob and unglazed interior. This teapot will ‘patina’ and season. It is sitting on a da-sun (tea-boat) in a da-hae (tea-sea). In addition the set includes a tea caddy, 5 cups, a cooling bowl, serving pitcher and a teapot lid stand.

Made of a 'porcelain' clay this teapot still 'breathes' and will develop the sought after 'crackle' patina indicating the proper seasoning of the pot. This effect is greatly desired by knowledgeable tea connoisseurs.

Buncheong Da-hae Set

2. Buncheong Da-hae Set: $400: This beautiful set features a ‘tum-bung-mun’ surface. The teapot with plain knob and glazed interior sits on a short da-sun sitting in the da-hae (tea-sea). In addition the set includes 5 cups, a cooling pitcher and serving pitcher as well as a teapot lid stand.

Buncheong is the term used for Korean pottery ware that has used liquid clay or 'slip' to decorate the surface. Usually white 'slip' is used. Thee ae many ways of decorating in this way. The ‘tum-bung-mun’ method involves quickly dipping the freshly made piece into a container of thin 'slip' and after bisque firing applying a glaze over the slip. Park likes to partially glaze his work, exposing some 'slip' and revealing the process. When fired, the glaze often takes on oxidation 'spots', a highly desired effect.

3. Large Dark Da-hae Set: $800: This beautiful natural fly-ash set features a large da-hae (tea-ocean), teapot sitting on a da-sun (tea-boat) in the large da-hae. In addition the set includes a tea caddy, 5 cups, a cooling/ serving teapot with strainer top, serving pitcher, tea leaf funnel and a teapot lid stand.

This set is similar to the set Park Jong Il uses on a daily basis to serve tea and for tea ceremonies.

Park Jong Il's dark cups are glazed for sanitary purposes. The remainder of the set is unglazed except for the natural wood fly-ash flashing.

4. Dark Dahae Set: $500: This beautiful set features a da-hae (tea-ocean) teapot sitting on a da-sun (tea boat) in the da-hae. In addition the set includes 5 cups decorated in the ‘gqey-yl’ buncheong style, a cooling/ serving teapot with strainer top, tea leaf funnel and a teapot lid stand.

This smaller dark natural fly-ash set has 5 cups featuring the ‘gqey-yl’ buncheong style. This is done by painting the surface with 'slip' or liquid clay using a rough brush. Like #3 above, the cups are glazed for sanitary reasins.

Now here is the "kicker" or incentive. You may know that we are also offering Park Jong Il's favorite tea. It is a hwang-cha or Korean yellow tea made by the artisan producer Jeong Jae Yeun. Even though we are nearly sold out of our first shipment of this tea, it is the holiday season and I'm feeling generous. The "kicker" is, if you purchase a 50g bag of Park Jong Il's favorite hwangcha I will deduct 15% from the price of any of these sets. I know I could do it the other way around but this way you would save much more. Note: this offer will not "double", that is if you buy two bags of hwangcha we will not take 30% off the price. But we will take 10% off the price of any second bag of tea we offer up to 4 bags. Please contact us for information or to reserve your da-hae set. By the way, this 15% discount offer with the purchase of tea extends to all the work we have in stock by Park Jong Il. This post will introduce you to the large variety of hand formed tea ware produced for sale in their tea shop in Insadong, Seoul. We are offering these items primarily as "shop items" rather than for individual purchase. We do not carry these items in stock ever. If you as an individual are interested in a small amount of this tea ware contact us to see if there is a store near you. If you are interested in purchasing 5 or more items we may be able to help directly. Contact us. If you have a legitimate tea ware outlet, contact us for great wholesale prices.
I actually debated if I should post these images or not. These images were taken with a cell phone so the true color and character of the ware will not be seen to its fullest. I decided to post these because I lost other images due to the theft of my laptop computer and will replace images here as I am able to get better ones from Korea.

It is about time you knew about the availability of this and the other tea ware we have been adding to our artists list and will be posting here. Follow us officially to be informed when they are available.

All of this work is hand formed in Korea and exclusive to Dong Cheon Tea. All prices are retail in Korea. The above items are offered by Dong Cheon Tea. To access a sale of their teas click here. You will note that that sale has ended but if you contact me and tell me you saw that sale here, I may be able to sell you the tea at the same prices.

Our goal is to make this site the go to site for tea ware on the web. We have a wide collection of outstanding tea ware artists including some of the most highly respected artists in Korea.

You may be wondering why I became interested in offering selected Korean tea ware and teas. In spite of what you may think it is not for financial gain. I could make much more doing other things. However, as you know neither Korean tea nor Korean tea ware artists have been widely available to the Western market. On our many trips to Korea we have found many excellent ceramic artists and fine tea producers. We formed Morning Crane Tea simply to help those tea ware artists and tea producers expand their market to the West. Essentially we did it for them and for you who are interested in Korean tea and tea ware. It is simply a way of giving back.

We hope that you will join us by becoming an official "public" member of this site. This is the blog where we will introduce new tea ware artists throughout 2012. Having difficulty joining? Contact us and we may be able to help.

There are many ceramic artists who create wonderful tea ware. We have had the good fortune to get to know some of them. It is their work that we will offer here at wholesale prices for the broader dealer market.

The tea ware market is flooded with inexpensive mass produced items that sell on the teashop shelf at very reasonable even 'cheap' prices. The ware we offer will be hand formed and decorated, and will be produced by highly skilled artists. Some of our artists, particularly those with international reputations, will be represented only on our Morning Earth Gallery on-line. Contact us for links to those artists. Morning Crane Tea ware is moderately priced high quality tea ware produced by highly skilled artists. We hope that you will find Morning Crane Tea Ware a welcome addition to the tea ware world.

The background photo in our title is taken from a small part of our collection. That title will change from time to time. Please become part of the Morning Crane Tea Family by becoming a 'follower' of this blog. Your suggestions and comments are welcome.

Primarily we sell our items to businesses but will reserve some work for our blog Morning Crane Tea Ware Family members, also at discount prices.

Tea ware on this blog are items we offer or items we are considering. You are invited to share your opinions in both cases.

Join us also on our main blog Morning Crane Tea where we introduce individual tea ware artists, some of whom we represent as their international agent and who's work is seen on the Morning Earth Gallery on-line.

More than 80% of the historic Korean celadon found in museums around the world was made in Gangjin.
Now through a special arrangement with a small group of celadon artists in Gangjin we are able to introduce a selection of beautiful tea caddies.
The tea caddies you find below are the prototypes for tea caddies from our Gangjin collection. The artists who created them include Kim Yu-sung and Shin Byung-suk both of whom have won the coveted Grand Prize for their celadon at the International Gangjin Celadon Festival. We are honored to have them participate in this project.
Each tea caddy is hand formed, hand decorated and double lidded to help preserve the freshness of the tea. Two of the tea caddies use buncheong methods of decorating and are not strictly celadon. All tea caddies can be made both decorated and without decoration. At the time of this posting, I have not yet received the sizes or costs but decided to create this post to get your reactions to the work.

We hope that you enjoyed seeing these tea caddies. Our Gangjin collection is just the first of several collections we will be offering. I am in awe of the color these Korean artists are able to achieve in their celadon. But we know that some tea connoisseurs prefer a more rustic look. We are working on expanding our collection to bring you a great variety of high quality tea ware at reasonable prices. You may even see onggi offered here. If you like the work we are trying to do please recommend us and this blog site to the teashop near you. Then tell us you recommended them through the email you find on our profile page.
Cho Hakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04798639210955177212noreply@blogger.com1
